Hypochlorous acid producing electrochemical bandage (HOCl e-bandage)

Class: DNA synthesis inhibitor

Agent Type: Synthetic; Direct acting;
Spectrum of activity: Gram-positive & Gram-negative
Mechanism of action: DNA synthesis inhibitor. Additionally isrupts ATP production and oxidizes thiol-containing proteins
Target Pathogen: Active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, methicillin-resistant and -susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Corynebacterium amycolatum, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterobacter aerogenes, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium
Description: Electrochemical bandage delivering low-levels of hypochlorous acid; shows 2.2 log CFU/ml reduction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa dermal wound infection in mouse; reduces purulence supporting wound healing; active molecule does not persist when in solution (requires a sustained delivery system)
Institute where first reported: Division of Public Health, Infectious Diseases, and Occupational Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA
Year first mentioned: 2007
Development status: Experimental
